Afternoon tea is quintessentially English. It was first introduced in England by the Duchess of Bedford, around 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o'clock in the afternoon. She would ask for a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her in her rooms at Woburn Abbey. Afternoon tea soon became established amongst Victorian society and a very English tradition was born. Since then it has been enjoyed by countless generations and it is my belief that it will continue to be so for many years to come!
